Xampion Tutorial - How to get started

  1. Charge your Xampion sensors using the Micro USB cable provided in the package. Charging time from empty to full is about one hour. The batteries last for up to 20 hours of active use.
  2. Download Xampion App from Google Play (Android) / App Store (iOS).
  3. Open App and tap ”Sign Up” to create your Xampion account and sign in.
  4. Add your sensor IDs to your Xampion profile by going to Menu -> Sensors. The sensor ID numbers can be found on the label on your sensors. When both IDs are added, save by tapping Submit.
  5. Establish connection between the sensors and the App. Keep Xampion App open and shake the sensors for about 10 seconds to power them up. You know the sensors are connected when the red connection symbols on the top of your screen turn green and battery level indicators appear. Make sure the Bluetooth on your smart device is on and the batteries on the sensors are charged. PLEASE NOTE: It is important to establish connection before your first session with Xampion to synchronise the clocks on your sensors. If this is not done before using Xampion, the session data may not have the correct time/date in your Xampion App.
  6. Make sure your Xampion insoles are the right size for your shoe. Use your original insole for measurement and cut with scissors if necessary. The easies way to cut the insoles to the right size is by placing your Xampion insole on a table with the bottom side facing up. Then place your original insole on top of it the same way with the heels levelled and the tips aligned. Then use a pen to draw a line to mark the excess in the tip area of the Xampion insole. Use sharp scissors and cut along the line.
  7. Place the insoles into your football boots and leave out your original insoles.
  8. Go play football! Xampion sensors power up and start recording data automatically when in motion. Power is turned off when sensors are still for 10 minutes. You don’t need your phone to start recording football data. PLEASE NOTE: When using Xampion for the first time, do a couple of maximum speed sprints with fast acceleration to set your first speed and tempo records into your profile. By doing this you will receive more accurate tempo related results from future sessions which are based on your personal performance.
  9. After the session, open Calendar View in Xampion App and shake the sensors for about 10 seconds to power them up and to transfer session data. Transferring the data may take from a couple of seconds up to about a minute depending on your device and how much data is being transferred. Keep the App open while transferring data. A new session (or several sessions) will appear on your calendar / session list. Tap the calendar date to open session information. PLEASE NOTE: Short playing sessions (less than 15 minutes) will not be shown in Xampion App as a new session. This is to avoid saving data to your app if the sensors have been switched on when moving them around when not playing.

PRO TIPS

Personal Performance Metrics

Xampion System provides personal movement metrics to help you track your progress easily and to make using Xampion motivational to players at all levels. Personal records affect all Tempo related metrics, number of sprints and all Skill Points.

IMPORTANT: When you record your first session with Xampion, you set your first records that will serve as a base level for your future sessions. In order to get relevant data in your sessions, make at least a couple of high tempo sprints and try reaching your maximum sprint speed. If this is not done, your records will be lower than your actual abilities and you may get misleading results in following sessions.

Connecting with Bluetooth

Xampion Sensors use BLE 4.0 Bluetooth to communicate with your Xampion App. Unlike many other Bluetooth devices, Xampion Sensors ARE NOT connected to your smart device by pairing them through your device’s settings. Connection can only be established through Xampion App. Once you have the correct Sensor IDs filled in at Menu -> Sensors, the Sensors will connect automatically when powered up by motion or when charging. Keep Bluetooth on in your device always when using Xampion.

Minimum Session Length

The minimum length of a session is 15 minutes and sessions that are shorter will not show up on your Session Calendar / Session List. This is to avoid irrelevant sessions from appearing due to motions recorded outside of the football field when for example carrying the sensors in your bag.

Editing a Session

Recorded Sessions can be edited in Xampion App by opening the Session List view and swiping left on the Session. In Session Edit view, you can edit the starting and ending times of the Session, split a Session into two or more Sessions, edit the type (Game, Training, Practice, Other), playing surface and add notes.

Transferring Data to Xampion App

Xampion Sensors start sending recorded data always when connected to your smart device. Sensors will connect automatically via Bluetooth when activated (in motion or connected to charger) and when the Xampion App is opened. You will know connection is established when you see the red connection symbols in the top bar of the app turn green and battery level indicators appear. The data is first being sent from your Sensors to your phone and new Sessions will then processed. When data is processed, a new session (or several new sessions) appear into your Calendar / Session List. this may take up to 2 minutes. IMPORTANT: Do not close Xampion App while Sensors are sending data to your device. Data processing requires internet connection.

Charging Sensor Batteries

Xampion Sensors have built-in batteries that allow 15-20 hours of active use once fully charged. You can see the battery levels in your Xampion App when Sensors are connected. When charging batteries, arrows pointing up will appear next to battery level indicators in the App. When attaching charger cable, make sure charger ports on the Sensors are free of dirt or other objects that may prevent charging and check App to find charging indicators.

Cutting Xampion Insoles

Xampion Insoles need to be cut to the right size and shape before inserting them into your football boots. We recommend cutting them into the shape of your boots’ original insoles to achieve optimal fit. Place your original insole on to of your Xampion Insole with both insoles facing underside up and heels aligned. Align the sensor’s side of the insoles and use a pen to draw a line on the Xampion Insole to mark the excess. Cut the excess out with sharp scissors. NOTE: Cut excess off from the Insoles outside edge rather than the inside (Sensor side) to ensure sufficient space for the Sensor.

FAQ

My shoe size is right between two Xampion Insole sizes. Which size should I pick?

If you think there is a risk that the smaller size may be too small, it’s a safer bet to go for the bigger size. The bigger insole can be cut smaller but the small can’t be made bigger.

Can I use my old Xampion sensors with new insoles?

Yes. Xampion sensors are removable and you can re-attach them to new insoles when you have outgrown your old insoles or they are worn out. To remove the sensors from your old insoles, carefully pull sensors out of their sockets and attach to new insoles. Secure with sports tape or similar.

Can I use my own insoles instead of the ones provided by Xampion?

Yes. Many sports insoles have a thicker area under the arch of your foot and for optimal comfort you can carve out some extra space for the sensor. Depending on the shape of your insole, this may or may not be necessary. You will find out best by using the sensors with your insoles a couple of times.

Can I look at my son's / daughter's performances on my own phone?

Yes, it is possible to be logged into a Xampion Account with two or more devices simultaneously. However, please keep in mind that the Account username and password are personal and we do not recommend giving them to anyone else without consideration to protect the user’s privacy.

I'm having trouble connecting the sensors with Xampion App, what should I do?

The most common cause for connection difficulties is that Bluetooth on the smart device is turned off. Make sure the Bluetooth connection on your smart device is on, the sensor batteries have been charged, and you have the correct Sensor IDs filled in at Menu -> Sensors. PLEASE NOTE: Xampion Sensors will not appear in the list of Bluetooth devices in your smartphone’s settings and cannot be paired through settings. The Bluetooth connection can only be established with Xampion App.

Try fully shutting down and re-opening the app. When in the Calendar view, shake your sensors for about 10 seconds to activate them. Refresh the calendar view by swiping down. The sensors should now be connected. When connected, you will see green connection symbols and battery indicators on the top of your screen in the calendar view.

If you can’t get the sensors to connect by following these steps, please contact Xampion support using the message form at xampion.com/support.

I transferred the data of my playing session to Xampion App but the data does not look right.

Incorrect session data is usually due to one of the following reasons:

  1. It is possible that the sensors have been activated from motion while you have carried them around for example in your pockets or your backpack. If the sensors are actively in motion for more than 15 minutes, this may create a new session in your app. If this happens, you may have several sessions recorded on the same day of which one is your actual play session and the others are non-relevant. If this happens, you can delete irrelevant sessions from Session List view by swiping right and tapping Delete.
  2. Another possible reasons for incorrect data in a session may be that one or both sensor batteries have run out during your session and the recording has stopped. You can check battery levels from the top of your screen in the Calendar View when sensors are connected to your phone.
  3. In some cases you may initially find incomplete data in a session if all the data has not yet been completely processed. Generating a new session usually takes 30-60 seconds after which a new session appears in your Calendar/Session List. If at this point the data does not look right, try fully closing the App and re-launching it. PLEASE NOTE: The App should not be closed during data transfer before notifications of completed transfers appear from both sensors. Closing App during data transfer may cause loss of data.
  4. When transferring data to your App you need to have internet connection because the session is processed on Xampion servers. If your connection is slow, a session with incomplete data may in some cases initially appear in to your App. If this happens, the session data will be completed as soon as you reach a better connection. Try relaunching the App when better connection is available.
  5. The data may be incomplete because of sensor malfunction. If either of your sensors are broken, the App will in most cases notify you when establishing connection and advice you to contact Xampion Support.

I transferred my playing data to Xampion App but data from my other sensor seems to be missing.

When transferring the data from your sensors to your app, the data upload from each sensor might not finish simultaneously. You may already see a new session in the calendar but in truth, the other sensor is still processing data. This is the most common explanation when data from only one sensor can be seen.

How to solve this: Give both sensors a little more time (2 minutes should be enough in any case) to transfer the data. Go to the Calendar view and refresh the page by swiping down. Try re-opening the session and see if the previously missing data is now available. If data is still missing, try fully closing down the app and re-opening it while keeping the sensors active by shaking them. Refresh calendar view and open session.

Other possible reasons for missing data:

  • One of the sensors has not been activated when attempting to transfer data. Shake both sensors for about 10 seconds while in the Calendar view and until you can see the connection symbols on the top of your screen turn green and you can see the battery level of both sensors. Data transfer will now begin automatically. If you have trouble connecting sensors, make sure the Bluetooth connection on your smart device is on.
  • The battery on one sensor is empty. Try charging the sensors using the MicroUSB cable provided in the sales package.
  • The battery on one sensor has died during the play session and has not been able to record data.

If you aren’t able to establish a connection between the sensors and the app despite following these instructions, please contact Xampion Support using the message form at xampion.com/support.

The Xampion Insoles feel uncomfortable, what can I do about it?

When switching from the standard (usually flat) soles that came with your football boots to Xampion soles, you will most likely feel the difference during your first session. This is mostly because Xampion Insoles provide more support under the arches of your feet than standard factory soles. Most foot specialists consider the support to be better for your pronation when you walk and run and may even prevent injuries.

However, feet are very individual and for a small percentage of users, the Xampion Insole may feel uncomfortable when playing. The most common reasons for this is that the person has very low arches or that the shape of the foot and the shoe is very narrow in the arch area.

If you experience this kind of discomfort, here’s a few tips:

  1. Xampion Insoles are made of material that will press down and adjust to the shape of your feet when using them for some time. The feeling of pressure under the arches will most likely go away after the first 1-2 hours of use as the insoles mold into the shape of your feet. Your feet will also get used to the support under the arches very quickly. So give the Xampion soles a couple of tries. In the vast majority of cases any discomfort is gone quickly.
  2. If this doesn’t help or it is painful to play, you can reshape the insoles. The soles are made of material that is pretty easy to shape with scissors or a sharp knife. If the problem is that the insole is too high around the arch area, you can slice off some of the material around the sensor socket under the insole. If you feel that the insole is too wide, you can cut it narrower. If you need to cut a lot, you may have to make the sensor socket a bit wider to make the sensor go further towards the center of the sole. It is also possible to cut some material off the heel end of the soles, which may be useful in some cases where the foot of the player is very small (size 37 and under).
  3. It is also possible to use Xampion Sensors with other insoles than the ones provided by Xampion. You can use strong tape to attach the sensors to the original insoles of your boots or other well fitting insoles. When doing this, attach the sensors to the corresponding area in the used sole as where it is placed with Xampion Insoles. Please note: If you want to use very thin soles with Xampion sensors, you may feel the sensors through them and this may cause some discomfort.
  4. If Xampion Insoles are not a good fit to you, you can also have a pair of custom soles made to the shape of your feet including the space for Xampion Sensors. Ask your local custom sole manufacturer for details and when ordering, ask them to construct a socket for the sensors.

Which Insole model should I choose and how do I shape Xampion Insoles for perfect fit?

When switching your standard insoles that came with your football boots to Xampion Insoles, you may initially feel a difference when playing. This is because there are hundreds of boot models available and they are each a little differently shaped. Every foot is also individual and there are countless combinations of shoes and feet.

As of Spring 2019 Xampion offers two different insole models. The Xampion Insole Slim is designed to mimic the average factory insole of a football boot and is the recommended model for players who have a low or normal arch height and do not need additional arch support. The Slim Insole fits well into the vast majority of boot models. The Xampion Original Insole provides arch support and may be the right choice for players with a high arch.

Because of the differences in shoe and foot shapes, a small percentage of users find the Xampion Insoles uncomfortable when playing.

So give the Xampion soles a couple of tries. In the vast majority of cases any discomfort is gone quickly.
  2. If this doesn’t help or it is painful to play, you can reshape or make some adustments to the insoles. If you feel the sensor pressing through the insole you can make it some more space by adding a few layers of tape on the underside of the insole around the sensor.
Ask your local custom insole manufacturer for details and when ordering, ask them to construct a socket for the sensors.
